A majority of U.S. voters believe the federal government should spend more on transportation infrastructure, according to a new survey commissioned by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
The poll of 1,996 registered voters by research firm Morning Consult found that 72 percent of respondents said the U.S. should invest more in transportation infrastructure, while 73 percent said the federal government should take the lead role.
Seventy-four percent of respondents said infrastructure investment would create jobs, with 70 percent believing such spending would help American businesses. Sixty-four percent of respondents said they want Congress to move forward with an infrastructure package.
"These figures echo a refrain the business community has been singing for years: investing in infrastructure is worth it," Chamber CEO Tom Donohue said. "America has a world-class economy with world-class businesses, and we should have world-class infrastructure to match. It all comes back to economic growth."
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao was scheduled to speak at the Chamber's headquarters Monday to kick of Infrastructure Week, an event in which several business leaders will highlight what they say is the need for more investment in roads, highways, water and sewer systems and other types of infrastructure. http://uscham.com/2riWkwg
